Apart from symbolism in terms of flight, the building also serves as a strong nautical reference to the maritime context within which it is set. This theme is followed through in the detailing of the walkway structures, where the lightweight roof is hung off angled masts by a series of cables. The design picks up on the regional theme of white walled architecture which is common to the western cape. The complex was completed in 2000 at a cost of R 10 million.
Bethlehem Hospital This private healthcare facilit Bethlehem Hospital
This private healthcare facility is being piloted by a new investment group who wants to invest in the upgrading of township surgeries to offer a higher level of private care. The existing 490m2 surgery is located in Bohlokong, Bethlehem in the Free State and currently consists of 3 consulting rooms and a small dispensary. The proposed facility has been upgraded to include 7 consulting rooms , a larger dispensary, a EC unit, a cafeteria, two theatres , a mortuary , a 30 bed ward , a kitchen and two flatlets.

The expanded facility has been designed to be built in phases and includes a green component which involves the installation of a water harvesting system and photovoltaic panels as well as a series of passive design and electricity and water saving measure. The project awaits licencing approval. #capetownarchitects #freestate #architecture
The Heathfield Madrassah Complex was initially con The Heathfield Madrassah Complex was initially conceived as an education facility with the main components being a pre-school/crèche, madrassah (teaching facility), auditorium and a prayer area. The different components are arranged around a courtyard which is typical of Islamic buildings, inwardly focused. The courtyard concept also provides for good security and movement and enables the different facilities to work together while operating independently.

The interplay between the Mecca axis and the site axis is taken up by circulation and support accommodation. This enables the more important spaces (teaching and activity areas) to be located on the outside and to maximise on natural lighting, ventilation etc. This also enables the outside of the building to synchronise with the urban built fabric while the courtyard and prayer facility orientates separately.
