Elliotdale Housing

ELLIOTDALE HOUSING has been the recipient of the following awards:
2012 South African Housing Foundation Project of the Year Award for Elliotdale Housing Project, Eastern Cape.
2012 Goven Mbeki Human Settlements Award for Elliotdale Housing Project, Eastern Cape.

The design of the Elliotdale pilot project required the utilisation of the the Breaking New Ground and National Sustainability policy concepts in a rural context. It incorporated sustainable alternatives which addressed basic human needs such as potable water through roof water collection, sanitation options such as vented pit latrines, energy needs from solar applications as well as housing provision.

The design concept locates housing provision within the bigger picture of sustainable settlements and facilitates the provision of education, health care and recreation opportunities. Such facilities through parallel projects grow livelihoods through enhancing agricultural and animal husbandry practices.
A multi-dimensional housing approach was taken to provide occupants with choice and assistance to buy their homes.

This Joint Venture between the Eastern Capes Department of Human Settlements and the Development Bank of South Africa entailed the delivery of 1000 rural housing subsidies to qualifying families through a consultative and integrated development approach.
