The Trojan Horse History Project grew out of a collaborative initiative which saw the Human Rights Media Centre and ACG Architects being commissioned by the City of Cape Town to install a Trojan Horse Memorial in Athlone, as a remembrance of the victims who were killed by the security police on 15 October 1985.
he Memorial, unveiled on Heritage Day, 24 September, 2005, includes a corten steel representation of the armed police shooting into the street. This serves as a remembrance of the violence that took place. Photographs of the victims are incorporated along the length of the street, with seating, to allow for a pause when contemplating the event.
The memorial includes the original graffiti painted on the vibracrete wall as a measure of protest by the local community. Given its use, this wall has deteriorated to such an extent that it had to be removed in July 2021. A fund raising initiative is underway to replace the wall.
