The Western Cape Education Department (WCED), with the assistance of the implementing agent and The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) appointed ACG Architects to provide school halls and mod centres (halls that allow a sport to be played indoors) at various schools across the Western Cape.
The initial brief consisted of 9 school sites and a prototype design was developed that would be able to respond the different site constraints. During the design development, WCED decided to rather adopt the conventional design to have a hall with two bookends, one for the stage and cloakrooms and the other for the main entrance ablution and future kitchen should there be a budget in the next financial year. During the technical documentation, it became clear that there was a misalignment between the budget allowed and the cost of the school halls and Mod Centres. WCED decided to pursue the MOD centres only and this went onto being constructed.
The biggest contribution has been to the school and its learners as they now have a safe space to gather for assemblies, a space for plays and for further after hour activities that keep the learners off the streets.
